MC2 Post 1835 The Week the Little Screen Got a Lot Smaller

TV Just isn't as important as it used to be.
Just like the newspaper.

Wingman.

The  Loss Leader Legacy of  the  "almighty dollar."

As the price of commercial 20-second spots has diminished, the importance of quality has taken a back seat.  If today's commercials only bring 50-60% of what they used to bring, they have to increase the number of commercials for a 1/2 show proportionally.

The challenge becomes Not how much better can we make TV? But How many commercials can we cram into a "30" minute show?

The number of commercials has exploded exponentially.

It has gotten so bad that an hour show "in today market" barely has a half-hour's worth of material.  Using all kinds of Ken Burnsian tricks to make us think we're really seeing something "really" important when in fact it's just another cut and paste, pan and zoom trick.

It makes "actors" out of non-actors, using the Ken Burns Effect.    And sadly, it works.  As the glut of
'reality' shows can attest.

The new tool in this "let's cut back the content"  (we're not getting that much per segment, anyway) and fill it with 30 second fill-in (padding) what we just showed you before the break, and remind you what we showed  you after the break,  You won't notice we're showing you mini-reruns.

The News Channels have gotten you used to that technique.
