MC2 Post 1553 Researchers Create Hollow Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cables are usually made of glass or plastic but those materials actually slow down the transmission of light ever so slightly. Researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK have created a hollow fiber optic cable filled with air that's 1000 times faster than current cables.

New Research Shows Speed of Light is a Variable

Two new studies that will be published in the European Physical Journal D according to a report at the Alpha Galileo website on March 25, 2013, demonstrate that the speed of light is a variable in real space.

Text book explanations of the speed of light assume that light travels in a vacuum but space is not a vacuum.

NASA's 'Curiosity' Rover Finally Back Up and Running

Last week, NASA's billion dollar Curiosity rover went into a state of hibernation thanks to a computer crash. The good news: the rover has a backup computer, which gives the mission team the time to fix the main computer. This event followed a similar event last month, which shut down the rover for weeks. 


Now, finally some good news from NASA: the rover is up and running again. Speaking on the fix, Jim Erickson of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), who also serves as Curiosity deputy project manager, said that “we are back to full science operations.”
