Hack Attack: Turn your $60 router into a $600 Router

Of all the great DIY projects at this year's Maker Faire, the one project that really caught my eye involved converting a regular old $60 router into a powerful, highly configurable $600 router. The router has an interesting history, but all you really need to know is that the special sauce lies in embedding Linux in your router. I found this project especially attractive because: 1) It's easy, and 2) it's totally free.

MC2 Post 1555 Huge Online Attack Exposes Internet's Vulnerability

===================================

The Dark Side of   Yesterday's Blog...

Not All Hackers Are Doing Bad Stuff --- BUT Some ARE !!!

Wingman.
===================================

It was the largest online attack ever reported. Over the course of the past week, servers belonging to an international non-profit company called The Spamhaus Project, which fights email spammers, were inundated with up to 38 gigabytes of traffic each second. That's about 10 DVDs' worth of data. The company ground to a halt, and another firm that tried to come to Spamhaus's online aid was also drawn into the battle. News reports suggested the onslaught was so big that the internet itself slowed down during the worst of it. Such accounts may have been overblown, but in the aftermath it has become clear that the attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in just about anything – from software to the infrastructure of the internet itself – to devastating effect.

MC2 Post 1553 Researchers Create Hollow Fiber Optic Cable

From:   http://www.engadget.com

Fiber optic cables are usually made of glass or plastic but those materials actually slow down the transmission of light ever so slightly. Researchers at the University of Southampton in the UK have created a hollow fiber optic cable filled with air that's 1000 times faster than current cables.

New Research Shows Speed of Light is a Variable

From:   http://www.examiner.com

Two new studies that will be published in the European Physical Journal D according to a report at the Alpha Galileo website on March 25, 2013, demonstrate that the speed of light is a variable in real space.

Text book explanations of the speed of light assume that light travels in a vacuum but space is not a vacuum.

NASA's 'Curiosity' Rover Finally Back Up and Running

From:   http://www.examiner.com

Last week, NASA's billion dollar Curiosity rover went into a state of hibernation thanks to a computer crash. The good news: the rover has a backup computer, which gives the mission team the time to fix the main computer. This event followed a similar event last month, which shut down the rover for weeks.

Now, finally some good news from NASA: the rover is up and running again. Speaking on the fix, Jim Erickson of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), who also serves as Curiosity deputy project manager, said that “we are back to full science operations.”

MC2 Post 1552 Better Bio-Batteries from Itty-Bitty Bacteria

From:   http://www.businessinsider.com

New research into electricity-conducting bacteria could lead to environmentally friendly "bio-batteries" that could create energy, be used as factories for biological products, or clean out
heavy metals from contaminated soils.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia in the U.K., and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington, discovered how a special type of bacteria known as Shewanella oneidensis, conducts an electrical charge when it's around heavy metals.

Additional Resources

Looking to get even more deeply involved in the Raspberry Pi community? Here are a few places

to look for more useful information.

    Raspberry Pi Project
    Raspberry Pi Forums
    Raspberry Pi Wiki
    Adafruit's Raspberry Pi Projects Page
Element 14's Raspberry Pi Resource Page
The Raspberry Pi Education Manual (PDF)

MC2 Post 1549 Are Sapphire's Really Harder than Gorilla Glass

Your Next Smartphone Screen May Be

Made of Sapphire

From:   http://www.technologyreview.com

Crystal clear: These unpolished, uncut boules of
manufactured-sapphire crystal weigh 130 kilograms
(left) and 100 kilograms (right).

Manufactured sapphire is incredibly strong and scratch resistant. Now falling costs and technology improvements could make it competitive with glass.

Manufactured sapphire—a material that’s used as transparent armor on military vehicles—could become cheap enough to replace the glass display covers on mobile phones. That could mean smartphone screens that don’t crack when you drop them and can’t be scratched with keys, or even by a concrete sidewalk.

The JVC projector reaches a resolution of 8K by using two 120 Hz images, one of them being slightly bent vertically.

The JVC DLA-VS5800 projector can give you the impression of a very big image without the huge resolution, but buyers will have to wait at least until 2016 to get more 8K content. The first 8K digital transmission tests are scheduled only in 2016.

Canon’s New Baby DSLR may be World’s Smallest, but isn’t Short on Performance

We’ve been hoping Canon would release a follow-up to its EOS M soon, but instead of a new highly compact mirrorless camera, Canon gave us shrunk-down DSLR. The camera weighs 14.4 ounces, and it’s 25-percent smaller and 28-percent lighter than the outgoing Rebel T4i. While it’s still larger than a mirrorless model, the SL1 is essentially a traditional DSLR stuffed into a much smaller body, but with newly enhanced features.

Kick Off  Those Ruby Slippers

and Get Coding

===================================

Ruby

Ruby is a relatively young language

(since only the mid-90s

with many similarities to python and perl.

However it has many characteristics which are all its own. Like those other two, more famous languages, ruby is suitable for programming simple scripts with very short development time, and also larger programs. It has quite a consistent approach which makes it easy to pick up, and can also use Qt libraries to build GUI programs, as we'll see. Its popularity has produced many frameworks and communities around the language, most notably the web framework "Ruby on Rails".

Getting and Running

That's pretty simple, you can download it for any Distro of Linux
(a lot of Linux Distros include Ruby along with Python and Perl
as a matter of Course).

I just installed it on Oracle's VM DropBox on windows 7 desktop,

running Fedora 18 LXDE.
