Barnes & Noble Reports $6.1m LOSS in
Q3 2013 Earnings

From:   http://www.slashgear.com

Of course, Barnes & Noble was expecting to take a big hit, so they’re about as surprised as we were (read: not surprised at all). NOOK made $316 million this past quarter, while the same time last year, it made $426.6 million. Overall, the company saw losses across the board, including their retail business, which saw a 10.3% decrease from last year.

MC2 Post 1531 How to Play All YouTube Videos Without Flash Installed

Google has been offering a so called HTML5 trial on the video hosting site YouTube for some time now.

Visitors of the site can join the trial to use HTML5′s video capabilities instead of those made available by Adobe’s Flash plugin. While that is great as it reduces the dependency on third party plugins, it may at the same time be limited to select videos depending on the browser that is being used.

The main reason here is missing support for one of the standards used by YouTube to make videos available. Mozilla Firefox for instance supports WebM but not h.264. While that is going to change soon, it does not seem to have an impact on the availability of videos on the site.

From:   http://www.ghacks.net

I’d like to share with you an option to play all videos on YouTube without Adobe Flash plugin even if h.264 is not supported by the web browser.

All you need to do is point your browser to the following address: http://m.youtube.com/

Please note that you need to actively switch to the desktop again as you can’t replace the url the other way round.

The easiest way to do so is to load the following url in the browser:

New Holes Discovered in Latest Java Versions

From:  http://www.h-online.com/security/news/

Security Explorations has informed Oracle of two new vulnerabilities in Java, "issue 54" and "issue 55", which it says can be combined to completely bypass Java's sandbox security. Adam Gowdiak, researcher at

Security Explorations, told Softpedia that the problems are specific to Java 7 SE versions, and allow abuse of  the Reflection API in Java, "in a particularly interesting way".

MC2 Post 1529 A New --Televised Life-- For HPs WebOS

"Rumors fly in the face of Reality..."

LG Buys WebOS from HP for Use
in Smart TVs

From:   http://www.theverge.com

"There was some truth to the rumors"

Skott Ahn, LG's president and chief technology officer, says "It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices." There's no indication of whether the deal will affect the Smart TV Alliance, which LG helped set up last year in an attempt to provide a unified software ecosystem for connected televisions; Toshiba and Panasonic are also members of the group.

HP re-enters the tablet game with the Slate 7

From:  http://www.gizmag.com

The slate's pricing matches its modest specs, coming in at a fairly reasonable US$169. There is however a lot of competition at this end of the tablet space, with devices such as Google's Nexus 7 coming in at a
similar price point ($199) and offering higher specs in many areas, including a higher resolution 1280 x 800 display and a quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

MC2 Post 1527 A New Firefox and A New ChromeBook

Firefox 19 Features New Built-In PDF Viewer

From:   http://www.itechpost.com

Mozilla launched Firefox 19 on Tuesday, Feb. 19; the new version of the browser features a built-in PDF viewer that allows users to view PDF files within the browser. By eliminating the need to download the PDF file in order to view the content, this saves time and a few extra clicks.

Adobe Acrobat is no longer necessary for Firefox 19 users, since the portable document file can be read directly on the desktop. Current Firefox users who already have the Adobe Reader plug-in can disable it by
selecting Tools from the browser's menu bar, then selecting Add-Ons and then the Plug-Ins tab. Then lookfor and disable Adobe Reader or uninstall it altogether.

WEB BROWSER DEVELOPER Mozilla has turned on WebRTC by default on its Firefox nightly releases, suggesting it is getting closer to public release.

Mozilla has been working on WebRTC for some time now and showing off demonstrations of its capabilities that allow web developers to access hardware, creating applications that run within the web browser. Now the firm has enabled WebRTC by default on the Firefox Nightly release channel.

MC2 Post 1526 The Playstation 4 Conference in NY --

After The Show Details  from PC Perpectives.

(Update 2: Press conference was over a few hours ago, and we now have an official press release.)

The Playstation 4, as it will be titled, is very similar to a mid-range gaming PC. When discussing with developers, they requested for Sony to stick with a typical x86-based architecture.

Of course that does not stop Sony from describing it as a “Supercharged PC architecture”. Still, they do seem to have quite a decent amount of hardware in this box.

    8-core x86 CPU
2 Teraflops GPU integrated on same die (update: chip).
I did not hear AMD mentioned, but it totally is.
    8GB GDDR5 RAM (shared)
Stereo Camera on the controller with a light bar, like the Wii, to judge distance to TV.
Also touch sensor in the controller.
    (Update/correction: At least a ...) Spindle-based Hard Drive

PlayStation 4 console: Why the Box
Doesn't Matter.

From:  http://www.slashgear.com

This week Sony unveiled the essence of the PlayStation 4 with glimpses of

both the controller you’ll be using and the new Eye camera that’ll come

with it, skipping the part where you actually see the final hardware. But we

know the specifications of the actual PlayStation 4 console unit, and we

know how we’re going to use it – so what’s the big deal? The big deal is

Sony’s complete dismissal of the modern eyes-on presentation that the

public expects here in 2013 – without something I can literally hold in my

hands, the PlayStation 4 may as well be vaporware.
